Common Problems

Problem: I'm using AOL and I can't connect to the stream.
Solution: If you're using the browser inside AOL, try opening another browser such as Internet Explorer and try again.

Problem: I can't connect to any of the streams when I'm at work, but I have no problem listening at home.
Solution: First make sure your computer has one of the supported players listed above. If you are getting an error such as "Unable to Connect" then your workplace probably has a firewall that is blocking your connection to our servers. Try using the 64k MP3 button at the top of the page.

Problem: When I'm listening, the stream will suddenly go silent and "buffering" comes up in the player.
Solution: Check your internet connection. If you are using a wireless connection, try disabling it and using a wired connection to the internet. Even fast wireless connections can create enough delay to cause a problem. If playing does not resume, press stop and then play. If it continues, try using the 24k MP3 stream. If that does not solve the problem, then your internet connection may not be fast enough to support streaming media. Keep trying. This can happen at times of the day when internet traffic is heavy.

Problem: I have the latest version of Winamp but when I click the link for the AAC+ stream, another program opens and nothing happens.
Solution: Try the Alternate Link. If that does not work, open Winamp. In the playlist window, click the add button, then click add URL and paste this into the window:
http://thecore.rutgers.edu/aac.m3u
Then click OK and double-click the new playlist entry (www.thecore.fm)

Problem: I'm connected to the stream, but all I hear is static.
Solution: That means there's a problem with one of our servers. Please report the problem to the email address at the bottom of this page.

Problem: Sometimes there's an extended pause between songs!
Solution: It happens. Just stay tuned. More great core radio is on the way.

Problem: I still can't get any of the links to work on my computer.
Solution: Ok, don't panic. Send an email to the address listed at the bottom of this page. Be sure to include as many details as possible about the problem you are having.

What is this streaming thing? Is it like internet radio?
Yes. 90.3 the Core is a radio station based in Piscataway, New Jersey that you can also hear on the internet.

How does it work?
Your computer talks to our state-of-the-art servers and says, "Hello. I'd like to hear 90.3 the Core." Our servers respond by sending a constant stream of thousands of ones and zeros per second back to your computer at the speed of light. Your computer then takes that stream of data and turns it back into beautiful music.

What do I have to give you in return for this wonderful service?

I've heard of MP3, but what's AAC+?
It's a format designed to sound better than mp3 at lower bitrates. Unfortunately, it's new and is still unsupported in most players, but it does work in Winamp versions 5.08 or newer, and in VLC Media player. It can also play in Windows Media Player if you install a free plugin provided by Orban, a company that specializes in broadcast technology.
